Automotive design cues that drive you nuts

Does anyone else get annoyed by the way certain cars were designed with little to no care for aesthetics? For example Ford Escape rear lower control arms. Who in the world thought this looked good from the back? Every time I drive behind one of these on the road I want to throw up.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Focus mufflers drive me nuts too.

It's an SUV, why are you bothered by the suspension being visible?

THIS. Especially if it doesn't have a rear diff.

Couple of things to pick from, really. The "my muffler is a styling detail", the vertical crease (awkward), the pipes-through-the-bumper fakery and dumbness, the styling line across the back "popping out", the wide hips that make it look like a half-carved pear...

Because, one - it's unappealing and two - look at the ground clearance of those things. Don't you think those things need to be higher up for an SUV? Also, there are plenty of other SUVs that don't have those hideous things sticking down like that.

Escape was just one of the cars. There re plenty of others. Not just suspension either. I hate cars that have mufflers stuck horizontally right behind the rear bumper and it's visible. New Focus is guilty of that. Give it a few years and those things will be piles of rusty mess sitting under there.

I have to admit, aside from the nausea I'm in agreement. Is the Escape useful off-road? Because they look quite low too, I'm not even sure I'd tackle an obstacle anyway other way but dead-centre.

The gas tank. NNNGFGGFGFGFGF.

Also the fact the exhaust pipes only really fill up half of the hole that is designated for them.

Because rightly or wrongly, rather than looking like the "GRR, ARGH" of a beefy axle, it looks like the metal toothpicks of an erector set project gone wrong, and isn't parallel to anything - making angular lines where everything else is cohesive?

I find aluminium lower control arms sexy. It's better than looking at some live axle/beam shit.

I dislike cars with really terrible fender to wheel ratios, like their front fenders are basically just the wheel with a thin, thin, band of body colored plastic wrapped around it and the whole distance between the bumper and A-pillar is like 4 inches. What the hell happened to proper proportions?

They could have made that valance a little lower, or more tightly trimmed. "Ha ha, fuck you", however. I could also not that the little reflectors look like ass too.

The muffler hanging out under the bumper. Namely on my mom's Vue.

You couldn't have tucked that shit 3 inches more upward so I couldn't see it?

Cars that have a brake light on the spoiler and in the rear window piss me off too.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one.

First of all, this looks so much better (ignoring the fact that the car itself looks better) and it looks like it could actually drive over a small rck without something breaking.

The control arms on the Escape I get, It's an SUV after all, it's not meant to be pretty. Granted, I owned one.

I agree entirely on the Focus though, I hate seeing mufflers exposed underneath.

I'm fine with it if it doesn't have a rear spoiler that has one too. If there's a spoiler that has one, take the one out of the back window.

This thing and its related oddities. Most notably the headlights. I dont need to even point them out. However, Lexus nailed the rear design, despite the double stack fake exhaust tips (again).

Lexus and Camry twin have an exhaust pipe that hangs 4 inches lower than anything else under the car. Made worse with the trailer hitch that has to change to a bent flat bar to clear the muffler.

That little fill in piece on the venza for the extra exhaust tip that you don't have. Either put two exhaust tips or don't have one, make up your mind toyota.

You can see my muffler from behind. I don't mind but I have thought about aftermarket ones that are smaller and less noticeable. I like how quiet my car is though and I don't want to annoy clients when I pull up in a loud car.

The worst/funniest was pulling up in my truck when my car at the time was out of commission. 302 with headers, true dual exhaust (originally it went to one pipe and split at the axel), and flow masters. No cats or resonators. Sounds awesome. A lot of my clients own nissan leafs and prii. Fortunately they're not judgemental and didn't give me crap about killing the planet.

Not even any stinkeye? Almost seems like a waste.

No, the best ways to annoy your clients would be something like... find a common vowel sound to mispronounce on purpose, or, if they're going places with you in your car, find a way to adjust all the seats so they're lower than yours. *Imagination*.

The vertical crease is from 1969's Sedan Deville, which even rendered it in rear glass.

Kinja'd!!!0

I'm not wild about it on the DeVille either, but it looks like it belongs. I think it's mostly just awkward anywhere there's no trunk lid to decorate - its purpose is to dress up a horizontal more than a vertical, so copying over just the vertical and dead-ending it into the rear glass with that weird lip is...eh.
